About the Program

The Department of Mathematics offers a comprehensive curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. All students begin with an introduction to the various subfields of mathematics through ten core courses and then select one of five options to tailor their program to best meet their career or advanced study goals.

Focus of Study

Students pursuing the applied math option may have graduate study or industry careers as their goal. This option prepares students for further study in mathematics and for careers requiring mathematical modeling or scientific computation.

Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics requires the following:

  • A minimum of 46 credit hours of MATH coursework. At least 31 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher)
  • A grade of C or better in courses applied to the major
  • A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all MATH coursework
  • No more than 60 credit hours of MATH coursework may apply to the bachelor’s degree
  • An Exit Interview with the Mathematics department is required prior to graduation
  • All Mathematics majors are required to meet with a faculty advisor in the Mathematics department during their first year as Mathematics majors

Program Coursework

General requirements for all students in the Mathematics BS program include the following:

  • Complete at least 45-49 credit hours of MATH courses depending on the option selected (49 for Applied Math option)
  • Complete each required MATH course with a grade of C or better
  • Maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0
  • Complete an exit interview with the mathematics department prior to graduation
  • Meet with a faculty advisor in the mathematics department during the first year as a mathematics major
  • Fulfill the specific requirements for the Option selected

All students are expected to take ten core courses, which allow students to become familiar with the different subfields of mathematics before choosing their focus. Core courses include:

  • MATH 1350 - Calculus I
  • MATH 1360 - Calculus II
  • MATH 2150 - Discrete Mathematics
  • MATH 2350 - Calculus III
  • MATH 3110 - Theory of Numbers
  • MATH 3130 - Introduction to Linear Algebra
  • MATH 3400 - Introduction to Differential Equations
  • MATH 3410 - Introduction to Analysis
  • MATH 3810 - Introduction to Probability and Statistics

In addition to the ten core courses, students selecting the Applied Math Option must complete the following five courses (13 credit hours), plus 6 additional credit hours of elected MATH courses numbered 4000 or higher:

  • MATH 2650 - Introduction to Computational Mathematics
  • MATH 4040 - Senior Math Seminar
  • MATH 4310 - Modern Analysis I
  • MATH 4470 - Methods of Applied Mathematics
  • MATH 4650 - Numerical Analysis

Students concentrating in applied math must also complete the following computer science and physics courses (12 credit hours):

  • CS 1120 - Computational Thinking with Beginning Programming
  • PES 1110 - General Physics I - Calculus Based
  • PES 1120 - General Physics II
  • PES 1160 - Advanced Physics Lab I

Students interested in pursuing a career in industry are advised to take at least two of the following courses:

  • MATH 4420 - Optimization
  • MATH 4430 - Ordinary Differential Equations
  • MATH 4450 - Complex Variables
  • MATH 4480 - Mathematical Modeling
  • MATH 4670 - Scientific Computation I
  • MATH 4850 - Stochastic Modeling
