About the Program
The flexible option offered by the Bachelor of Science Math program allows students to tailor their undergraduate degrees to better match their future career goals or plans for graduate study.
Focus of Study
Mathematics is a dynamic field of study, which is constantly evolving in response to external challenges coming from applications and internal challenges coming from unsolved problems. It plays a central role in science and engineering, and a key supporting role in economics, business, and government.
Students who are analytical by nature, who enjoy thinking critically, and who appreciate a deep understanding of what they study may find mathematics attractive, stimulating, and challenging.
The Department of Mathematics offers a curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics; this degree is well-suited for students aiming toward a variety of mathematical careers in industry or secondary education, or planning for graduate education.
Program Requirements
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics requires the following:
- A minimum of 46 credit hours of MATH coursework. At least 31 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher)
- A grade of C or better in courses applied to the major
- A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all MATH coursework
- No more than 60 credit hours of MATH coursework may apply to the bachelor’s degree
- An Exit Interview with the Mathematics department is required prior to graduation
- All Mathematics majors are required to meet with a faculty advisor in the Mathematics department during their first year as Mathematics majors
Program Coursework
General requirements for all students in the Mathematics BS program include the following:
- Complete at least 45-49 credit hours of MATH courses depending on the option selected (46 for the Flexible option)
- Complete each required MATH course with a grade of C or better
- Maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0
- Complete an exit interview with the mathematics department prior to graduation
- Meet with a faculty advisor in the mathematics department during the first year as a mathematics major
- Fulfill the specific requirements for the Option selected
All students are expected to take ten core courses, which allow students to become familiar with the different subfields of mathematics before choosing their focus. Core courses include:
- MATH 1350 - Calculus I
- MATH 1360 - Calculus II
- MATH 2150 - Discrete Mathematics
- MATH 2350 - Calculus III
- MATH 3110 - Theory of Numbers
- MATH 3130 - Introduction to Linear Algebra
- MATH 3400 - Introduction to Differential Equations
- MATH 3410 - Introduction to Analysis
- MATH 3810 - Introduction to Probability and Statistics
In addition to the ten core courses, students selecting the Flexible Option must complete five courses (15 credit hours) of elected Mathematics courses numbered 4000 or higher, including at least one of the following:
- MATH 4130 – Linear Algebra I
- MATH 4140 – Modern Algebra I
- MATH 4310 – Modern Analysis I
Students interested in pursuing a career in industry are advised to take some of the following courses:
- MATH 2650 - Introduction to Computational Mathematics
- MATH 4420 - Optimization
- MATH 4430 - Ordinary Differential Equations
- MATH 4450 - Complex Variables
- MATH 4480 - Mathematical Modeling
- MATH 4850 - Stochastic Modeling
